Manual Handling Training
Manual handling training is a type of workplace training that focuses on teaching individuals how to safely lift, carry, push, or pull objects manually to prevent injuries and promote overall health and safety. Manual handling refers to any activity that involves using the human body to move or support an object, including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
Here are some key elements that are typically covered in our manual handling training:
- Risk Assessment - identifying potential risks, assessing the characteristics of the objects being handled and evaluating the environment
- Correct Lifting Techniques - proper body mechanics and correct posture as well as the demonstrating the correct way to grasp and hold objects
- Equipment usage - instructing on the use of mechanical aids or lifting equipment when appropriate
- Team Lifting - importance of teamwork when handling heavy or awkward objects and highlighting effective communication and coordination between team members
- Fitness and Flexibility - the importance of maintaining overall physical fitness and flexibility to reduce the risk of injury and providing information on exercises to improve strength and flexibility
- Health and Safety Regulations - familiarise participants with relevant health and safety regulations related to manual handling as well as the responsibilities of both employers and employees in ensuring a safe working environment
- Practical Demonstrations - provide hands-on demonstrations of proper lifting techniques, and allowing participants to practice lifting and handling objects under supervision
- Reporting Procedures - instruct on the reporting procedures for incidents or near misses related to manual handling and encourage open communication about any discomfort or pain experienced during manual handling tasks
- Ergonomics - Discuss the importance of ergonomics in designing workstations and tasks to minimise the risk of injury
- Regular Refresher Training - Emphasise the need for regular refresher training to reinforce good habits and update participants on any changes in procedures or equipment
Manual handling training is crucial in various industries to ensure the well-being of employees and compliance with occupational health and safety standards. Training programs may vary depending on the specific requirements of the workplace and the nature of manual handling tasks involved.
